Can't wait for the dates and to register again. This year I'm doing The Beast too, I've already done 40 miles of the route. Excellent route and right on my door step :)
01/02/2012 22:08:12 Corinne

The 2012 dates will be up here as well as facebook and twitter very soon. Looking forward to seeing you all.
26/01/2012 20:20:42 ED

Wow, a lot of data from Nick's link. Glad to know it was around 4900 feet of climbing as that's a big number for a 50 miler. Anyone got any info on the %ages on the climbs? ps enjoyed my first go st this and will be back as long as it doesn't clash with Darlo Blues Festival (18th this year)

Hi, update on my arm it was a dislocation of everything - ulna, radius & elbow itself. It took several attempts to get them all back where they should be - avoiding surgery so phew no breaks! Back at work - everyone presumed I fell off the horse not the bike! Big thanks to Barry from me, (Linda sent on my details) - hope you got a good time in the end? Hopefully see you next year, cheers to St John's guys as I babbled on gas & air! Last, but not least Phil for holding my 'good' hand (but not while they put the bones back in of course)thank goodness for morphine! TTFN Karen :)

Nick Spencer has sent this to me and I thought it may be usful to anyone on Beast - or indeed if you fancy it next year - CHEERS NICK http://www.facebook.com/l/0AQBYzevqAQAGYz1XmLXIQ2nFf41EI03B2msWoIGUQ_uv7A/connect.garmin.com/activity/113535075

To Karen Elliott and Richard. Is Karen OK after her accident? Did the paramedics and hospital confirm Karens self diagnosis of a broken arm? Hope you are well and on the mend.It would be great to see you riding The Beast again next year. Best wishes. Barry.

Hi Ed and all others involved the The Beast" ride. I big thanks to you all for making Sunday a great day. The whole thing fronm start to finish was organised fantasticaly and a very welcome rest stop at Tow Law to boot. This was the second year I have done this ride and I can guarantee I will be back next year as long as the dates dont clash with the Darlington Hell of the North!! The route is great with fab scenery and unrelenting climbs, its a must for all cyclists. It was good to meet so many enthusiastic cyclists who were really "enjoying" the challenge. Once again thanks for a great event. Julian Pinkney, Darlington
12/09/2011 16:55:39 Julian Pinkney

brilliantly organised, well done again, if possible was better organised than last year, which was also very good, thanks to the bike doctors at Tow Law feed station-sorted gears out quickly and were very helpful. see you next year.
12/09/2011 14:37:38 Clive Hardman

12/09/2011 12:00:25 Ian Richardson

Thanks to all the organisers and all the people supporting the ride.I was grateful for the refreshments at Tow Law, just enough to re charge the batteries. It was well sign posted and the warning signs for the pot holes were a great help.I did nt see any accidents myself so once again well done.
12/09/2011 09:11:46 Paul Peart

Just woken up after a snooze on the sofa after The Beast 2011 Ride. I'd just like to thank the organisers for the excellent marshalling and signage all the way round today. Certainly puts other events to shame. Pleased you stuck with the choice of t-shirt to give the finishers as well. Good to have a t-shirt that I can wear and not throw straight into the recycling bin. Looking forward to next year! Mark
11/09/2011 17:48:09 Mark

I would like to congratulate the organisers and staff of "The Beast". I have done several rides of this type in the past and this is by far the best organised. The goody bag was great too :-) Looking forward to my third Beast next year.....I think!!! Well done everyone :-)
11/09/2011 17:36:59 Phil

After doing the Northern Rock Cyclone and the Great North Bike Ride this year and a few small rides during the summer I was really taken back as to how enjoyable the BEAST 2011 ride was today. I now know why its called the BEAST! - tiring but good fun and that nasty wind added to the mix! I thoroughly recommend it though and will be doing it again I am sure in the future. Alot of thanks has to go to the organisers and staff they were really friendly and helpful. Cheers. Kian
11/09/2011 16:42:42 Kian

Cracking ride well organised pretty tough course for just 50 miles, see you next year.

10/09/2011 14:06:26 Kevin Cuthbert

I said in my last comment that if we r here next yr Will have name down Again, now i Will.I dedicate my ride from this yr to my MOTHER BETSY who passed away early Monday morning.GODLESS.KEVIN.
07/09/2011 12:56:08 Kevin.

Had a great ride totally enjoyed it. Thanks to Kevin, below, who helped me off the rode when I came off at 22 mph. Still nursing sore ribs and cuts and bruises but it wont stop me riding again last year. Even though I felt a bit robbed of my glorious finish (rode slowly in clutching my ribs, and cant remember getting my medal due to being in pain) my medal is now my pride and joy. I can now say I did the Durham big ride, and even got up those banks !!!!
06/09/2011 12:10:31 Gary Watson

Colin Appleboy complaining again, "although there was no explanation as to why it appeared to have been delayed" Lighten up Colin!!

04/09/2011 19:35:49 ED

Hi, is there a .GPX file for The Beast route so I can upload it to my satmap? Cheers
03/09/2011 15:37:37 Anthony

not long now and things are looking good for both weekends.
02/09/2011 21:09:58 ed

Sounds like GNBR was busy! I do feel for the family and organisers when things happen that no one could envisage. OUr thoughts are with all concerned.
31/08/2011 08:51:58 ED

JENNIFER - don't worry! just let us know at registration and we can sort.
31/08/2011 08:49:19 ED

yes the GNBR was busy, and the headwind made it hard going, and sadly one person died of a heart attack.
30/08/2011 20:39:42 shaun

Yeah, I did the GNBR, think there were about 2000 cyclists!
30/08/2011 13:42:50 Phil Robinson

hi i put an online application through yesterday and have just noticed i have put this through for the medium bike ride and not the big ride which i wanted how can i change this over with out having to buy another ticket.its a bit frustrating there is no contact details at all on the website.
30/08/2011 06:10:25 jennifer

yes i did it and yes it was busy at the start but spread out after 20miles. but very windy which made it harder.
29/08/2011 20:31:13 jennifer

Anyone do the Great North Ride? Just wanted to know if it was busy as we are doing well with the Beast numbers.
29/08/2011 18:27:23 ED

Ed., I am pleased to say that yesterday I received my documentation for the Beast, although there was no explanation as to why it appeared to have been delayed. However, there are still over two weeks to go so 'no problem'! Regards, Colin.
27/08/2011 00:26:44 Colin Appleby

I'm doing the 25 mile course and was wondering what the gradients are like throughout it. Are there many banks ? Whereabouts ?
25/08/2011 07:52:44 Gary Watson

Colin, I shall chase this one for you. Anyone else NOT got their number and think they should have, please email info@durhambigride.co.uk with your name , date when you applied, which ride and any ref no from paypal. Cheers
22/08/2011 15:09:41 ED

Hello Ed, I noticed that some entrants have already received their numbers and information packs. I posted my entry form and cheque for the 2011 Beast in May but have received nothing as yet. Can you please confirm whether all the entry forms have been actioned?
21/08/2011 23:54:34 Colin Appleby

Beast is proving popular this year so it looks like we will be over last year's numbers. The race numbers are for our admin - so don't start at 0001.
11/08/2011 16:27:39 ED

Whoo Hoo. My number for the Beast and info pack turned up yesterday. Time to start getting exctied. And just to answer a question for awhile back, I did the Beast on my mountian bike last year and found it no problems on it, but then since i only have a mountian bike im not used to anything else. Its what you feel most comftable on. Hope the numbers are getting there Ed. Im number 183 so hopefully there will be more than last year. And one last thing, I love the polo shirt we get at the end, but id love a medal next year ;-)
09/08/2011 18:55:45 Adam Moul

Thank ED, my numbers came a couple of days ago 3080/3081. Does that mean there are already over 3000 people registered? :)
04/08/2011 16:13:42 Corinne

On both rides we had over 1,000. So with around 275 on the Beast that makes around 700 on the other three rides. Looks like we will be on the same sort of figures this year, although the Beast might be a fair few more. A bit vague I know but a huge portion of applications come in the last three weeks IE from now on. get yours in now! Ed
04/08/2011 16:10:41 ED

How many did the Big Ride last year? How many are signed up to do it this year? Thanks C
03/08/2011 19:12:37 Corinne

Thanks for this. I will see if I can find out how this "raising charity funds by doing something" work package technically works. I would chose the long route but not the beast, alone due to the gravity reasons.
27/07/2011 12:59:57 Astrogeordie

The Durham Big Ride does not have an 'event charity' but we do encourage all riders to help a charity of their choice. We have a number on our 'worthy causes' page that use the event to raise profile and cash but it really depends on youself. If you are thinking about doing The Beast with a trailer, I would ask others who did it last year how tough it was. Depends on you but I would suggest the 25 mile is tough enough! But what do I know! LOL Cheers Ed
27/07/2011 10:58:45 ed

Hi Ed, thanks for this. Maybe I should do something "painful" for charity, as putting a sack of cement into the trailer. But how does the charity fundraising exactly work ? Can I specify a charity of my choice or am I restricted to them mentioned in "worthy causes" ? I am interested in the long route by the way ...
26/07/2011 17:42:52 Astrogeordie

We have had quite a few trailers on the big and middle rides over the years. A bit bumpy in parts but we have had no real concerns from others who have completed the routes.
26/07/2011 12:47:07 ed

I just heard about the Durham Big Ride and being a passionate cyclist myself I think it is a great idea ! I just had the (maybe completely mad!) idea of taking my bike trailer with me to do a ride for charity. But I do not know if trailers would fit the track and/or would be allowed - I do not want to cause tailbacks as Fred Dibnah's steam tractor ;*). Nor I know how to do a charity ride at all.
25/07/2011 13:31:35 Astrogeordie

it was all to do with ecomonics and timing really. With both things there just wasn't time to sort all of the different things that needed to be sorted out for a good event. The Dirty Big Ride did have a nice atmosphere but there wasn't a sponsor to be had to keep the prices down to a reasonable level. If anyone knows a company / sponsor who would like to get involved, tell them to get in touch and I am sure we could get something on next year.
23/07/2011 16:17:52 ED

Why is there no off road event this year? It seemed pretty successful last year!
21/07/2011 12:48:10 Chris Shields

Same training as last year for the Big Ride. I'll be doing the entire route on Monday morning, then a few more times before the actual ride. I'm also doing the Great North Bike Ride this year and that's a week before the Big Ride. Oh, I'm also doing the Big Ride with my lil sis this year. Should be fun!
15/07/2011 15:26:37 Corinne

Your right about it being the toughest 50 miler in the country. Out of all the events i've did, that is the toughest one i've did. My legs were shot by the end of it. Way too many hills. I was getting sick of hills by the end. :P Oh, i will be joining you on this beast next year! Possibly even the Dirty Big Ride if that's going ahead! Merry Christmas to everyone!
21/12/2010 19:14:47 Matt Davies

The Beast was a great hard ride and was the first time I have ever done anything of that distance before managed to complete it in 3 hours and 58 minutes which was one hour less than the five hour target I had given myself. Thoroughly enjoyed it will definitly do it again had a fantastic day.
07/09/2010 15:29:47 Stephen Gash

Done 'The Beast' on Sunday, absolutely the hardest 50 miles around!! Paul completed by 1pm but Lisa not until 3pm. 7 of us completed the ride and 6 of us will be back next year! Signs were clear and easy to follow, shirts were great and all organisers were lovely. Not for the light hearted!!
07/09/2010 07:58:28 Paul & Lisa

many thanks to the organisers for an awesome ride.very intense course well sighned and marshalled.exellent all round.roll on next year i'm sure it will be bigger as the word is spread around.

06/09/2010 21:18:56 paul peart

Ive only been riding for the last year and this was my second big ride and it was a challenge and a half with all those huge hills!!! Great orginisation and I met a great bunch of pepole. Thanks for the aches and pains!!! Cant wait for next year.
06/09/2010 20:46:57 Claire Thomas

Thanks for a really enjoyable ride. As stated before, people were really friendly and the route well signed. Thanks to all your team that organised it.
06/09/2010 17:31:52 Simon Clarke

Fantastic day -well organised, signage was excellent. Good to have the pre-warning about the flooded area near Knitsley Mill . (thanks to Pete who mailed in on the 3rd) and for the brief before set off, Polo shirts best yet! thanks for a good day.
06/09/2010 11:20:04 Clive Hardman

Hi, I'd like to say how well organised the whole event was. The route was awesome; this must be the most intensive & difficult 50 miles anywhere. Fab! Kevin
06/09/2010 10:55:57 Kevin R Ross

What a great day out. The Beast is aptly named! Well organised, great starting instructions and very well signposted. Many thanks to the organisers for creating a great ride....roll on next year
