16.09.2007 - Launch of the first ever Durham Big Ride
A windy, if dry day, saw the first ever Durham Big Ride.
With over 600 people of all ages and abilities signed up we had another wave of last minute entries to bring the total over 700 bikes on the line at 9.30.The Mayor of the City and the Chair of the County were on hand to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable ride. People from near and far came to the event and even a couple of people who were in the area from the USA managed to hire cycles and thought it was the best way to see the Durham area! The first back were greeted by the Mayor and as the waves of people came it was clear that the day had been a great success. The pictures show that a good time was had by everyone. All riders are looking forward to 2008.
21.09.2008 - Event improves on success
Just under 1000 cyclists participated in the second Durham Big Ride on a warm sunny Sunday. We listened to feedback from 2007 and noted there was demand for a route that families could enjoy, which would not be as long and ambitious as the Big Ride, so we introduced a new 10 mile route called the 'Middle Ride'.
On site entertainment was expanded and there was a mountain bike stunt show, falconry exhibition and a juggling act to keep the crowds entertained. Medals, t-shirts, fruit, water and goody bags were awarded to every cyclist who finished their route and again, the event turned out to be an enjoyable successful experience.
